If you searched for a primer on the Four Pillars method — a book to "be your own Saju master" — you were after one thing: a plain-English path from "eight strange characters" to actually reading your own chart. This is that primer, free and self-contained. Work through it once and you'll never look at your Saju as a black box again.
What the Four Pillars method actually is
Saju (사주, literally "Four Pillars"; Bazi / 八字, "Eight Characters" in Chinese) reads your life from the year, month, day, and hour of your birth. Each of those four time units becomes a pillar, and each pillar is written as two characters stacked together:
- a Heavenly Stem (천간) on top
- an Earthly Branch (지지) on the bottom
Four pillars × two characters = eight characters. That's your whole chart. Everything a Saju master does is read relationships between these eight characters — which elements pile up, which are missing, and how the top character of your day pillar (you) relates to the rest.
The raw material: 10 Stems and 12 Branches
The method is built from two fixed cycles.
- 10 Heavenly Stems, paired to the five elements (each element has a yang and a yin form): Gap/Eul = Wood · Byeong/Jeong = Fire · Mu/Gi = Earth · Gyeong/Sin = Metal · Im/Gye = Water
- 12 Earthly Branches, the familiar zodiac animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig — each also carrying an element.
Every year, month, day, and hour is stamped with one Stem and one Branch. Combine the four stamps and you have your eight characters. You don't memorize this — a Ten Thousand Year Calendar (manse-ryeok) does the conversion. The concepts below are what you actually read.
Step 1 — Build your chart
Enter your birth date and time into a manse-ryeok (or a free Saju calculator) and out come four pillars. Hand-calculating means converting lunar/solar dates and solar terms by hand, so a calculator is the accurate route. Two practical notes:
- No birth time? The day-based reading — personality, aptitude, core drives — still works. The hour pillar mainly refines later life, children, and precise timing.
- Lunar vs. solar? A good calculator auto-converts, so just enter your date correctly.
Step 2 — Find your Day Master (일간)
The single most important character is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — the Day Master (일간, il-gan). This character is you.
If your Day Master is Gap (yang Wood), you read like a tall tree — upright, principled, growth-seeking. If it's Gye (yin Water), you read like rain or a stream — adaptable, perceptive, quietly persistent. All ten Day Masters have a distinct temperament, and the entire chart is interpreted as "how does everything else support or challenge this character?"
Find your Day Master first. It's the anchor for every step that follows.
Step 3 — Weigh the five elements
Now count how your eight characters distribute across Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water.
- An element you have a lot of → a strong, sometimes overplayed tendency.
- An element you're missing or short on → a life area worth consciously strengthening.
This balance is the heart of the method. From it, a Saju master judges whether your Day Master is strong or weak (well-supported vs. outnumbered), which decides your useful element (용신, yongshin) — the element that brings your chart into balance. In practice, your useful element points to helpful directions, colors, seasons, and the kinds of people and work that steady you.
| Reading | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Element in excess | Overexpressed trait; watch for imbalance |
| Element missing | Growth area; lean into it deliberately |
| Day Master strong | You can take on output/wealth; act outward |
| Day Master weak | Seek support/resource first; don't overextend |
Step 4 — Read the Ten Gods (십성)
Here's where a flat chart becomes a story. Label every character by how it relates to your Day Master, and you get the Ten Gods — ten functional roles:
- Resource (인성) — support, learning, mothers, recovery
- Companion (비겁) — peers, rivals, self-reliance, competition
- Output (식상) — expression, creativity, performance, children
- Wealth (재성) — money, results, control of resources, (for some) spouse
- Officer (관성) — discipline, status, career structure, (for some) partner
Where these cluster tells you where your life energy naturally flows. Heavy Wealth? A results- and money-oriented drive. Heavy Output? An expressive, creative, "must-make-things" temperament. This is the layer that turns "I'm yang Wood" into "I'm yang Wood with strong Output and thin Officer — a maker who resists rigid hierarchy."
Step 5 — Read the flow with Luck Pillars (대운)
Your eight characters are fixed, but life moves. Every 10 years a new Luck Pillar (대운, daeun) rolls in — a fresh Stem and Branch that interacts with your chart, plus each calendar year adds its own annual pillar. Reading these tells you what season of life you're in now: a decade that feeds your useful element reads as tailwind; one that piles onto an already-excessive element reads as friction to manage.
This is where combinations multiply and complexity explodes — and where getting help from an expert or an AI reader saves hours.
Putting it together — a mini reading
- Build the four pillars from birth date + time.
- Find your Day Master — that's you, and its element.
- Weigh the five elements: what's heavy, what's missing → strong or weak Day Master → useful element.
- Label the Ten Gods to see where your energy flows (money, expression, discipline…).
- Overlay the current Luck Pillar to read the present season.
Do those five in order and you've done what a Saju master does. Everything beyond this — special stars (신살), fine combinations, timing to the month — is refinement on top of this backbone.
FAQ
Is Saju a fixed fate? No. Read it as your innate "weather map." The point isn't a locked outcome — it's knowing your prevailing conditions so you can dress for the weather and time your moves.
Do I need to read Chinese characters? No. Understanding the concepts — Day Master, five-element balance, Ten Gods, Luck Pillars — matters far more than reading the glyphs. A calculator handles the characters.
How accurate does birth time need to be? Within an hour is ideal for the hour pillar. If you only know roughly, focus on the Day Master and element balance, which don't depend on the exact hour.
