Tarot began in 15th-century Italy as illustrated playing cards used for trick-taking games. The 78-card structure later settled across Europe, and from the 18th century it became linked with symbolic, astrological, and occult interpretation as a divination practice.
As a card tradition it is about 600 years old; as a divination language it has more than 250 years of reading history.
