Most beginners learn about the Day Master and stop there. But a full Saju reading uses all four pillars — and each one governs a different chapter of your life. This guide explains what the Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars each mean, and how to read them, with special attention to the month pillar, the one most people struggle with.

The four pillars at a glance

Each pillar is a two-character unit (a Heavenly Stem on top, an Earthly Branch below) stamped from a different unit of your birth time. Together they map your life across time:

Pillar Chinese Life stage Governs
Year 年柱 Childhood (0–15) Ancestors, family roots, early environment
Month 月柱 Youth (16–30) Parents, career, social self, environment
Day 日柱 Adulthood (31–45) Yourself and your spouse
Hour 時柱 Later life (46+) Children, legacy, old age

A quick way to remember it: the pillars run left to right like a timeline — the year pillar is your origin, and the hour pillar is your horizon.

Reading the Year pillar (年柱)

The year pillar is your roots: ancestry, family background, and the environment you were born into. It colors your early childhood and the inheritance — literal and temperamental — you carry from your parents' and grandparents' generation. A strong, supportive year pillar often reads as a stable launch; a clashing one can point to an eventful early environment.

Reading the Month pillar (月柱) — the one everyone asks about

If you searched "how to read the month pillar" (月柱怎麼看), you're not alone — it's the pillar beginners find hardest, because it does the most work.

The month pillar is the single most important pillar after the Day Master, for three reasons:

  1. It sets the season. The month branch tells you which season you were born in, which decides whether your Day Master's element is in season (strong) or out of season (weak) — the foundation of the whole reading. A Wood Day Master born in spring is well-supported; the same Wood born in autumn (Metal season) is under pressure.
  2. It's your social and career self. The month pillar governs youth, work, and how you operate in the outer world — parents, career, and environment all live here.
  3. It anchors the Luck Pillars. Your 10-year Luck Pillars (대운) are derived from the month pillar, moving forward or backward from it. So the month pillar quite literally seeds the flow of your life.

How to read it in practice: first check the month branch for the season and what element it feeds — does it strengthen or drain your Day Master? Then read the month stem through the Ten Gods (is it Wealth? Officer? Output?) to see the dominant theme of your working, social life. Season first, then role: that order keeps the month pillar from feeling overwhelming.

Reading the Day pillar (日柱)

The day pillar is the center of the chart. Its top character — the Day Master (일간)is you, the anchor every other character is read against. Its bottom character (the day branch) is traditionally read as the spouse palace, describing your marriage and closest partnership. When people say "your Saju," they usually mean the day pillar first.

Reading the Hour pillar (時柱)

The hour pillar is your horizon: children, later life, legacy, and how your story resolves. It also fine-tunes timing and outcomes across the whole chart. This is why birth time matters — without it, later-life and children readings lose resolution, though personality and core aptitude (read mostly from the day and month) still hold.

How the pillars work together

No pillar is read in isolation. A Saju master reads the interactions — which branches clash or combine, which stems reinforce your useful element, and how the four pillars balance across the five elements. The Day Master tells you who you are; the other three pillars tell you when and where your life themes play out.

FAQ

Which pillar is most important? The day pillar (it holds your Day Master), followed closely by the month pillar (season, career, and the seed of your Luck Pillars).

I don't know my birth time — can I still read three pillars? Yes. Year, month, and day still give a full personality and aptitude reading. Only the hour pillar (later life, children, precise timing) is missing.

Why does the month pillar decide if I'm "strong" or "weak"? Because the month sets the season, and an element in its own season is strong. That single judgment drives your useful element and much of the interpretation.
